About the Episode
Hayden puts his fear of heights to the test by ziplining through the Tsitsikamma treetops, and treks through the Knysna forest to discover some of the tallest trees in the country. Back on level ground, Hayden learns how to whip up a typical South African breakfast, and takes a trip with the WWF to visit the remains of the once-famous Knysna oyster beds. Inspired by the local delicacy, he then demonstrates how to prepare some enticing oyster accompaniments.
Picturesque Knysna is a surprisingly vibrant town, which offers a wide variety of experiences to suit all kinds of holidaymakers – from high energy adventure pursuits to the finer things in life. Surrounded by natural beauty in the form of forests, mountains and waterways, all undertakings in Knysna are scenic, whether your slipping the town’s ubiquitous oysters down your gullet or sampling the delicious locally brewed beer.
What’s Hot in Knysna
Take part in the experience of a lifetime and zipline through the magnificent canopy of indigenous trees in the Tsitsikamma forest. Tree-friendly platforms are built around giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees that are up to 700 years old!
The Big Tree in the Tsitsikamma stretches its distinctive yellowwood leaves skywards, towering above the canopy. Thought to be between 600 and 800 years old, it stands 36.6 m tall and is reached via a lengthy boardwalk through the dappled light of the lush forest.
Not so long ago, Knysna’s power was obtained from a wood fired turbine situated on one of the Garden Route’s finest locations – Thesen Island. Today the power station is a magnificent boutique hotel on Knysna’s lagoon, which still manages to preserve its industrial mystique and heritage status.
